3 Elements That Elevate Your Design Instantly, According to a Pro

If you ever looked around your home and wondered what you can do to improve your design, look no further. The space might not be begging for an extensive renovation or a major furniture overhaul—it can simply come down to styling.

That’s one reason we were thrilled to connect with the design experts at Floor & Decor, as they taught us a design hack we never thought of.

According to their team, three simple design elements instantly create a well-decorated space—and we’re here to share them with you.

We connected with Ashley Biscan of Floor & Decor who explained how a curated combination of a light and dark contrasting palette, warm tones, and modern patterns can instantly translate into a beautiful, styled home.

3 Elements to Perfect Design

  1. A light-meets-dark contrasting color palette
  2. Warm, neutral tones to ground the space
  3. Modern patterns for a pop of visual interest

Element #1: A Light and Dark Contrasting Palette

Interior Impressions

According to Biscan, one of the best ways to create a more sophisticated space is by implementing a contrasting palette. The key, however, is to choose warm or cool tones and remain consistent. By doing so, Biscan says you’ll create a cohesive foundation.

Then, carry this palette through the rest of your home. This effect should extend to everything—from paint to furniture, soft goods, and fixtures. The focus should not be on single-color items or accents—Biscan says it’s best to include pieces and fixtures that feature light and dark.

“Carrara marble’s natural patterns are striking with light and dark veining throughout,” she says.

Biscan also notes that light and dark contrast doesn’t just mean black and white. While this can, of course, be stunning, Biscan also loves green and ivory. Keeping it simple has the added benefit of being timeless—any contrasting neutrals or earth tones are a great way to ensure you’re designing a space with staying power.

Element #2: Warm Tones

According to Floor & Decor, if your goal is a more elevated space, it’s officially time to embrace the collective shift to warm neutrals.

“Ivory and ecru are luxurious and romanticize everyday living,” Biscan says.

Biscan also notes that this palette creates a welcoming and hospitable base and layers expertly with other sandy shades. Plus, you can easily connect these hues back to the first element and layer your light warm neutrals with darker tones for a stunning contrast.

“Deep espresso hues in rich hardwood balanced with warm neutrals like modern travertine, limestone, and marble are chef’s kiss,” Biscan says.

Element #3: Modern Patterns

If your tastes skew more traditional, then the phrase, “modern patterns” might sound like an instant turn-off.

But, Biscan assures us modern doesn’t necessarily mean contemporary. Instead, this element is more about looking at ways to shift classic patterns so that they feel fresh.

For example, Biscan says checkerboard tile is making a major comeback right now.

“I love this look in an entryway to set the tone for a polished home, especially with a more subtle approach by pairing low contrast tiles to make the pattern,” she says.

Another pattern on the rise again is the marquis diamond, which Biscan says she’s seeing more in mosaics and smaller, unexpected areas.

“It’s a beautiful homage to the Art Deco era,” she says. “It’s ideal for an unexpected nook like a wet bar.”
