One major pro of a pint-sized bathroom is that it is typically fairly affordable to give it a facelift.
The less square footage you’re working with, the less you’ll have to spend on material and perhaps labor. Plus, just a few accessories can make a big impact in a tiny space.
If inspiration has struck and you’re ready to remodel your petite bathroom without taking out a second mortgage, here’s where you can start.

Update Your Wall and Shower Tile

Wall tile is one cosmetic change that makes a huge impact. If you have expensive taste, you might find yourself drawn to tile that’s a bit out of your budget. Before splurging, Green recommends exploring ways to make a more affordable material, like subway tile, look more high-end.
For example, you could arrange it in a herringbone pattern, or look for one with unique flair.
“Subway tiles come in lots of different colors and finishes, so you can still achieve a custom look in the space,” she says.
Design Tip
Another perk of working with a cheaper material like subway tile is that you may be able to afford to take it to the ceiling, which Green notes can make the entire room appear larger.

Install Large-Format Tiles for Flooring
Next to wall treatments, flooring is the next upgrade that offers the biggest bang for your buck.
Installing new flooring will always take a big chunk out of the renovation budget, but Green notes that opting for large-format tiles rather than mosaic ones can save you money, especially on labor, since they are typically quicker to install.
“The options of large format tile are endless and selecting one that resembles marble or stone can create a luxurious feel to your bathroom,” she says.
Add a Fresh Coat of Paint
Painting your tiny bathroom doesn’t require a ton of paint, and it’s a DIY that you can often accomplish in just a weekend.
To make a cramped bathroom feel more spacious, light, and airy, Green suggests going with a lighter shade like soft blue or neutral. Just be sure you select a durable paint finish that can withstand moisture.
And your walls aren’t the only surface you can paint.
“Instead of replacing cabinets entirely, consider painting them,” Green says. “A fresh coat of paint in a modern color can completely transform the look of your bathroom.”
Enhance the Lighting

A bathroom’s lighting should be functional and contribute to the overall ambiance.
When you get ready for the day or simply need to freshen up, you need ample lighting to be able to see. But when you’re unwinding for the day, you may find yourself wanting more dim mood lighting.
For this reason, installing a dimmer on your lighting is one small and affordable change that can make a big impact.
If you want to take it a step further, Green says swapping out your old lighting fixtures for new ones or installing sconces can make your bathroom feel practically brand new.
Leverage the Power of Mirrors

If your small bathroom currently has a small mirror, there’s a big opportunity for an upgrade.
Installing a larger mirror will instantly make the space feel grander and more expansive. While you’re at it, look for a mirror with a unique shape or frame to infuse some more personality into the space.
Green also likes using mirrors in creative ways in a bathroom’s design. For example, she suggests playing with the idea of installing a gallery wall of mirrors.
Don’t Forget the Details
Little details take a bathroom from looking builder-grade to custom or, dare we say, luxurious. Installing crown molding, upgrading your cabinet handles, hanging a new shower curtain, and investing in a new set of towels all go a long way.
While you can let yourself splurge on a few items, Green also swears by shopping thrift stores for vintage decor accessories.
