The simple answer is no—watering your lawn when the sun is shining won’t kill it or prevent it from growing well, but there are certain times that are better than others to keep your lawn looking pristine.

When Is the Ideal Time to Water Grass?
While watering your grass in the sun won’t harm it, the best times to water your lawn are not at the peak of the summer heat in the middle of the day. In fact, the best two times in the day to water are the early hours of the morning and early evening before the sun goes down.
Why? Watering your grass when the temperatures aren’t at its highest peak will help the water absorb into the soil more.
When Not to Water Your Grass
While watering your grass will always keep your grass hydrated, there are certain times that won’t be as beneficial. If you water your grass too late in the evening after the sun sets, your lawn will remain saturated as temperatures drop. Watering your grass at night could also cause it to rot which could increase the probability of fungus and unwanted insects.
How to Keep Grass Watered When It’s Sunny
The ideal time to water to your lawn during the dog days of summer are between 6 and 10 am before the sun really starts beaming down on it. If you’re not an early bird like me, you can also water your grass around 5 pm to 8 pm. This will ensure the grass will dry completely before the sun sets.
Another trick is to mow your lawn in the early hours of the day as well, so the water can really penetrate your lawn.
How Much Should You Water Grass?
Watering your lawn two or three days out of the week should be enough to hydrate and replenish your thirst quenched lawn. Grass typically needs about an inch of water per week, which correlates to about 20 minutes per time.
Lastly, remember that your lawn is finicky. You may think that overwatering will help ensure its growth and health, but overwatering can actually hinder it. Overwatering will cause your lawn to become patchy, and have brown or dormant spots. Overwatering could also cause your lawn to grow more of those pesky weeds you hate. to ensure you don’t overwater your precious lawn, you may want to consider getting a timer for your sprinkler system.
