The 6 Best Vacuum-Mop Combos of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

Not all messes are created equally, which is why a vacuum-mop combo that can handle wet or dry spills can be a useful tool for households. We have tested a number of vacuum-mop combination machines in The Lab and at home, evaluating traits like effectiveness, ease of maintenance, and maneuverability.

We compared and contrasted different brands and models to ultimately come up with a thorough list of recommendations, including brands like Bissell, Tineco, Roborock, and more. These machines can often feel like a luxury (and can have the price tag to match), but you will be streamlining tasks that can take a lot of time and elbow grease to complete.

Just don’t forget to leave yourself a few minutes at the end of your cleaning session to empty your dirty water bin and rinse off components, since vacuum-mop combos take more maintenance and care than their vacuum-only counterparts, in our experience.

Editor’s Note: This roundup was revised in June 2024 to include new testing insights, specifically for the Airthereal VacTide V2 Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner and Ecovacs Deebot X2 Combo All-in-One Robot Vacuum.

What We Like

  • Works on hard floors, carpets, rugs, and more

  • Separate tanks for clean and dirty water

The Bissell CrossWave has been known to be one of the first mainstream vacuum-mop combos, and to date, we think it’s still one of the best available. The HydroSteam Wet Dry Vac model, a recent release, topped the charts during our recent lab testing, impressing us with its performance, versatility, and overall ease of use—we even included it on our list of the best vacuum cleaners.

This wet-dry vacuum is designed to vacuum, wash, and steam your floors simultaneously. In other words, the future is here, and it comes in the form of this mop and vacuum combo machine. Switching between vacuuming and washing, or vacuuming and steam cleaning, is as simple as pressing a button on the handle. And, unlike many other similar products, it can be used on area rugs and floor mats, as well as sealed hardwood floors and pressed wood floors.

When we tried it on carpeting in our lab, it handled a mess of coffee grounds and cereal in a jaw-dropping 21 seconds. We were also impressed by how it only took a few minutes for hard floors to dry after use—although a few subtle streaks were visible.

The vacuum weighs just 12.5 pounds and is designed with two tanks, so dirty water never contaminates your clean water. This CrossWave is powered by a 25-foot cord for unlimited run time—although, you may need to pause to refill and empty your water tanks, depending on the type of cleaning you’re doing.

The potential hiccups we noted (its noisy operation, and how the cord could get in the way) felt especially minor compared to the overall powerful performance. This is an easy-to-use machine that lives up to its ambitious promise of smoothly handling multiple types of cleaning.

What We Like

  • Relatively quiet for power level

  • Cordless and easy to maneuver

  • Auto mode was sufficient for our messes

  • Voice commands

While Airthereal may not have the name recognition that Bissell does, the brand’s vacuum-mop combo, the Airthereal VacTide V2, impressed us just as much. We tasked it with soggy messes like a broken egg (including the shell!), cereal, and oats, and it smoothly handled everything. In fact, the phrase used to describe its performance in the lab was “like a champ.” We also used it entirely on auto mode, and we never even had to bump it up to the max mode.

Strong battery life is a common theme among many of our favorite vacuum-mop combos, and this pick is no exception. We didn’t quite come close to reaching the brand’s posted limit of 35 minutes, and still had roughly 80% of power left after we completed all of our cleaning tasks in the lab. We think this bodes well for this machine’s ability to both clean up quick messes and do a full cleaning pass around your kitchen.

A few smaller but notable details that we appreciated include the quiet operation (except for parts of the self-cleaning cycle, but that was pretty quick), and the voice commands (which you can turn off, if so inclined). One minor quirk that we encountered was, after taking apart the dirty tank to empty it, the pieces were a bit confusing to put back together—the float in particular. But, we managed!

One big difference between this pick and our best overall pick, the Bissell Crosswave HydroSteam Wet Dry Vac, is that the Bissell has the ability to steam clean, while this option doesn’t—although with a price difference of roughly $80 at time of publish, that seems like a reasonable trade to us.

What We Don’t Like

  • Noticeable, high-pitched sound when running

  • Battery depleted to about 55% during testing

Out of all the vacuum-mop combo machines we tested, the Ecowell Lulu Quick Clean P05 was one of the highest performing. It impressed us from the get-go, fully clearing heavy debris from hard flooring in seconds—without leaving visible smears.

We found that carpet cleaning was also very smooth. During testing, the mess of coffee grounds was quickly and efficiently cleared away. The carpet was just a bit damp afterward. While we did notice that this model was a little more resistant over the carpet than the hard floor, this also made it feel as if it were cleaning deeper.

We found that the maneuverability of this model was quite good, and the small related maintenance tasks, like emptying the water reservoir and cleaning the brush, were simple, too. We encountered some egg shell debris lodged behind the roller brush, but it was easy to wipe away with a rag. Speaking of the brush, we appreciated the drying feature.

Buyers should know that we did notice a slight high-pitched whirring noise when it was running, and we found that our testing process depleted nearly half the battery, which was higher than most that we tested. Still, all in all, this vacuum-mop combo compares very well to the big brand names in both effectiveness and ease of use.

Additional features like a self-cleaning mode and a HEPA filter are the icing on the cake.

Do vacuum-mop combos use and need a filter?

Like regular vacuums, most wet-dry vacuums have some type of filter that helps to capture dirt, dust, and hair particles and keep them from being recirculated back into your home. Check your product’s instruction manual to find out how often the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced to ensure your vacuum stays in peak condition.

Roborock Dyad Pro Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner

What We Like

  • Multiple brush rolls

  • Edge-to-edge cleaning

  • Multiple cleaning modes

The Roborock Dyad Pro is a newer combo vacuum on the market, and it offers a variety of useful features that help it stand out from other upright models. For instance, it has not one, but two brush rolls that help it pick up more dirt, dust, and liquid from your floors, and one of the brushes offers edge-to-edge cleaning that allows you to get closer to baseboards (a big perk, if you ask us!).

When we tested it in the lab, we were especially impressed with how effective it proved to be at picking up both wet and dry messes. It had no issue going from coffee grounds to mayo to soggy cereal, even pulling residue from between grooves.

In addition to its efficient cleaning, we liked the digital display that shows how much battery life is remaining. During our testing, we used roughly 30 percent of the battery power, which gives us confidence that it would comfortably last for most home cleanup tasks. There’s also an app that allows for some control of the machine, but we were not able to connect with it during the lab testing because of 5G limitations.

The vacuum features separate tanks for clean and dirty water, and you can mix the brand’s floor cleaning solution into the clean water tank for a more thorough clean (we didn’t try this when testing, though). This high-end model even has a self-cleaning button that removes dirt and grime from the brush roll, sucking it up into the dirty water tank, and it tells you when the brush rolls have fully dried, too (which took roughly 3 hours and 15 minutes).

We found that the brush rolls were a bit tricky to remove (which needed to be done to check an obstruction), but overall, we were very impressed with the Robotrock Dyad Pro. If you’re looking to invest in a wet-dry vac with lots of bells and whistles, this a great option.

What We Like

  • Quiet operation

  • Strong battery life

  • Effective suction, automatically adjusts for different messes

  • Easy to maneuver machine and empty bin

The Tineco Floor One S5 is another example of a high-quality machine that handled our testing tasks well—especially on grouted flooring, which appeared so clean that it was as if someone had run a washcloth over the grout lines. These results were easy for us to come by, too, because the machine has what the brand has dubbed iLoop Smart Sensor Technology that automatically manages suction, water flow, and brush roll speed to handle various messes.

After all of our testing, the battery life appeared to deplete by roughly 20%, which was less than many other battery-powered vacs that we considered. A sensor indicator gives a read of battery status, along with other key details like whether or not the machine has detected debris, and the flow of water it’s using.

Like most machines, the hardwood floor, which we dirtied with egg and granola, posed a bit more of a challenge than the grout. We were still satisfied with the S5’s performance though, since the floor had only a bit of residual mess in the tiny hardwood floor cracks. We did find that going more slowly over messes helped its performance, too. We were also pleased with how easily this vacuum handled chair and table legs.

Another feature we appreciated was the self-cleaning process. We utilized it in between each test, and it really seemed to make a difference, in a good way, for how the machine performed overall. The squeegee strip on the vacuum was still visibly messy after the self-cleaning mechanism though, and a separate wipe with a washcloth was necessary. This felt like a minor concession for an otherwise impressive machine though, and we still heartily recommend it.

Ecovacs Deebot X2 Combo

What We Like

  • Set includes robot vacuum-mop and stick vacuum

  • Can handle households with multiple floors

  • Self-cleaning, self-emptying

While upright vacuum-mop combos simplify your routine by combining tasks, robot mops (most of which will vacuum, too) take it to the next level. These cleaning machines can be impressively efficient, easy to set up, and a breeze to maintain thanks to the number of functions that are automated for you. The Ecovacs Deebot X2 Combo All-in-One Robot Vacuum is a great example.

During months of at-home testing, this machine was tasked with cleaning and maintaining a busy family home. You can run the vacuum and the mop features separately or simultaneously, allowing you the flexibility to clean your floors how you want and when you want. A number of the maintenance tasks, like emptying the dust bin, washing the mop brushes, and checking the components, are pre-programmed for you.

When you first set up the station, the robot will run and automatically map your home with its sensors. Then, you use the corresponding Ecovacs app—which is one area of minor complaint for us, since it’s not very intuitive—to manage your cleaning sessions and schedules. You can also task it with mapping other levels of your home, if it’s more than one story tall.

Now, we do want to call out that robot mops tend to excel at general maintenance cleaning and upkeep, but they’re not the product to get if you expect to target big messes and spills. With this one in particular, the mopping mechanism is brush only, and it doesn’t have a collection basin on the robot for dirty water or solids. We’ve found it to be great regularly cleaning and keeping our floors looking shiny, but we wouldn’t necessarily send it out to sop up a spilled bowl of cereal without first manually cleaning the big pieces first.

And as much as we love this set, we do recognize that it’ll be more than some households need or want. If you’re just after the robot vacuum and mop without the additional stick vacuum, Ecovacs does sell the Deebot X2 Omni on its own, too.

Weight: 41.5 pounds (entire set) | Battery Life: 210 minutes (robot)

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for a vacuum-mop combo that’s effective and can handle multiple surfaces around your home, the Bissell CrossWave Hydrosteam Plus Steam Cleaner is our best overall pick. It’s able to clean sealed hard floors and carpets, and it’s lightweight and easy to maneuver. Our best value pick is the Ecowell Lulu Quick Clean P05 Cordless Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vacuum. It managed all flooring surfaces easily, and features a built-in brush dryer and HEPA filter.

How We Tested the Vacuum-Mop Combos

We’ve tested over 350 vacuums in The Lab and in home settings. Our recent round of vacuum-mop combo testing took the experience and expertise we’ve gained and applied it to this very specific category. We considered each vacuum’s setup, ease of use, effectiveness, and maneuverability, and the process required to empty and clean it after usage.

  • Setup: For setup, we timed how long it took put together each vacuum-mop, following the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Effectiveness: During the effectiveness portion of the test, we made consistent and careful messes on different types of flooring (with raw egg, milk, cereal, and granola) so that each machine was faced with nearly identical cleanup tasks. We then used each vacuum on these messes, taking note of performance and the length of time that they took to clean up the spills.
  • Maneuverability: To assess maneuverability, we made more specific messes—only this time, we spread them near the edge of and underneath furniture, so each machine had to be moved and adjusted accordingly.
  • Emptying and Cleaning: Finally, for the emptying and cleaning of each vacuum-mop, we emptied the collection bin and dirty water tank. When the vacuum-mop included a self-cleaning mode, we tried that too, taking careful notes about how smooth this process was (or wasn’t).

Finally, once we had clear data for each machine, our editors reviewed and assessed the results to create this list of what we believe are the very best, highest-performing vacuum-mop combos.

What to Look for in a Vacuum-Mop Combo

Type: Upright or Robot?

There are several types of vacuum-mop combos that you may want to consider for your home. The best option for you depends on what cleaning tasks you’re trying to tackle, and where those messes tend to be.

  • Upright models, whether corded or cordless make up the majority of our list. They typically have a water tank or on-board cleaning solution that’s dispensed then sucked up as you operate the vacuum-mop. On the outside, they look and feel very similar to a classic upright vacuum.
  • Robotic vacuum-mop combos are also increasingly common. These units, like the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Combo (best robot) are able to mop and vacuum at the same time without you lifting a finger, providing a deeper clean than a robot vacuum could alone. These units tend to have a very small water tank and are often expensive, however.

The Vacuum-Mop’s Capacity

As with any vacuum, you’ll want to consider capacity as you compare different models. Most options have a dirt bin that collects any liquid and debris you suck up, but upright models typically have a separate clean water tank. This allows the vacuum to dispense fresh water and cleaning solution onto your floors.

Keep in mind that small water tanks may need to be refilled frequently if you’re cleaning a large area, but large water tanks will likely make your model heavier to carry from one room to another.

The Ease of Cleaning the Vacuum-Mop

One of the common complaints about vacuum-mop combos is that they can be tricky (and often gross) to clean after use. After all, the dust, dirt, and water you suck up all gets mixed together in the collection bin, resulting in a muddy mess. To make the cleaning process easier, some have a self-cleaning feature, which uses clean water to rinse off the brush roll. Our pick for best overall, the Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus Steam Cleaner, is an example of a machine with a robust self-cleaning feature that impressed us.
