Why Spruce Readers Think Open Floor Plans Are Overrated

Open floor plans are popular in many homes today due to their open and airy look. When you take down walls or barriers to join two or more spaces, it helps your home feel lighter, brighter, and even promotes better traffic flow.

But how do people actually feel about open floor places? We asked our Facebook followers for their thoughts were on open floor plans, and whether you love them or hate them, people had opinions. While some were totally over them, others were in total support of this concept.

Are Open Floor Plans Overrated?

The short answer is yes, according to most of our Facebook followers. Many fans voiced their dislike and even hatred for open floor plans due to the lack of privacy.

“Hate them,” one commenter wrote. “So noisy with no privacy. I have a 1915 Craftsman bungalow and it’s the most cozy, comfortable home I’ve ever lived in. I love the separate rooms and the character it gives.”

Another follower even said, “Is there a ‘loathe option?”

Although many comments were pretty colorful, we totally understand where our followers are coming from. Open floor plans may give off a cold feeling to some people, rather than a cozy or homey look.

That said, there were some followers that stayed true to their love of open floor plans.

Why Some People Still Love Open Floor Plans

Although the majority of commenters tore down any appreciation for open floor plans, there were a few people who voiced their love for them.

“Love them,” said one poster. “I’m in the kitchen so much (by choice!) that if my home wasn’t an open concept, I’d never be able to be a part of the conversation or know what was going on. My last home had all closed off rooms and I hated it.”

Another follower wrote about how it’s not a one size fits all dilemma.

“All new homes should not follow the same template,” they said. “Different strokes for different folks. Personally, I like a kitchen open to the family room but away from bedrooms.”

Open floor plans can help your home look less cluttered and more airy and you have the ultimate decision about what rooms you’d like to connect or not. For example, if you want your bedrooms closed off, you can have an open floor plan concept connecting your living room and sun room, or your living room and dining room.

We totally understand both sides of the argument. While mostly our fans shouted out their distaste for this concept, we also loved hearing why some people actually love it for its openness and airy feel. Ultimately, the choice is yours to make and we want you to have a home that’s perfect for you—and not anyone else.
