Yelp Reveals the Top Pest Problems This Summer Across the US

Summer is at its height which means more bugs, pests, and rodents ruining your fun festivities in the sunshine. Yelp just released data uncovering the top pest problems in the U.S. and it’s a lot to unpack.

Read on to see the top ten pest issues this summer and how to deal with these unwanted guests.

1. Cockroaches

Cockroach searches are up to 323% this year making it the number one issue for exterminators. Notably, Washington, D.C. ranks number one for roach treatment services.

Use roach traps and place them around high-traffic areas in your home, like cabinets in your kitchen and underneath your oven. You can use baking soda where you have seen them.

2. Spiders

Searches for spider help are up 236% nationally this year, which means it’s time to get started on an evacuation plan. One of the most effective ways to say goodbye to spiders in your home is to remove food and water sources.

Make sure to clean up dirty dishes and not leave crumbs or leftover food particles out for pests to enjoy. Spiders in particular love to live in the corners of your home or underneath furniture, so make sure to clean those hard-to-reach spaces.

3. Wasps

No one wants wasps ruining their summer vacation, and unfortunately, wasps are taking over the country and searches are up 147% compared to last year. The search for wasp help ranks the highest in Washington, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.

Wasp traps are super easy to hang around your yard and will kill them once they enter the trap. You can make a homemade repellent too.

4. Termites

One of the last things you could want in your yard or house is termites. These small but mighty pests are experts at breaking dead wood, which could cause havoc.

The termites search this year is up 121% and are searched the most in Hawaii, Florida, California, Arizona, and Delaware. To get rid of termites, treat your soil outside with insecticide. Boric acid may also work well.

5. Ants

Ants seem to always show up when you least expect them, and whether it’s to your summer potluck or a picnic with your partner, let’s agree that no one wants them in their home. Ants take the fifth spot for the most searched pest problems.

The best way to get rid of them? Remove any food sources in your kitchen and store your trash properly.

6. Fleas

The search for flea extermination is up 85% this year, which means they are just an annoyance as they always have been.

To remove them from your home, regularly vacuum especially where pets have been. Also, make sure to thoroughly wash your pet’s bedding if you have one.

7. Ticks

Ticks feed on human blood and animal blood, so it’s important to get rid of them immediately. Although they rank 7th on this list, searches are up by 79% this year, so it’s still something to keep in mind while enjoying summer activities.

If you spot them, vacuum and clean your carpet and furniture from top to bottom. Wash your bedding and other linens as well with hot water.

8. Bed bugs

Bed bugs (up by 72% this year) are something you never want to see in your home. If you need to quickly kill them, expose them to high temperatures, or vacuum them up.

Dispose of them immediately outside and away from your home.

9. Mice

While mice are nice to see in cartoons, they aren’t so fun to see in your kitchen when you’re getting ready to entertain guests.

According to Yelp, the search for getting rid of mice is still up by 57% this year. Luckily, we’ve found that mouse traps work effectively and quickly.

10. Mosquitos

Surprisingly, mosquitos are last on this list but are still up by 53% this summer. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to get rid of these bugs by simple maintenance.

Get rid of any standing water in your yard and don’t forget to use mosquito repellent.
