Automatic feeders aren't just for cats. They can help keep meal times consistent for dogs, especially when your schedule changes. Dogs bring their own challenges, though: bigger portions, bigger kibble and more determination.
Portion size and capacity
Large dogs eat considerably more than cats, so:
- Check the maximum portion size per meal, not just total capacity.
- Make sure the hopper holds enough for the time between refills.
- Weigh a few dispensed portions yourself when setting up.
Kibble size
Large-breed kibble can jam mechanisms designed for small pieces. Look for a stated kibble size range and compare it with your dog's food.
Sturdiness
A hungry dog may push, chew or tip a feeder. Useful features include:
- A heavy or wide base, or the option to fix it in place.
- A locking lid on the hopper.
- A chute that's hard to raid.
Some owners place the feeder in a crate or a separate room to prevent tampering.
Power and connectivity
The same principles apply as with cat feeders: mains power with battery backup is the most reliable, and app control is useful if your schedule changes. Check that schedules continue if Wi-Fi drops.
Slow feeding
If your dog eats very quickly, splitting the daily allowance into several smaller meals can help. Some owners pair a feeder with a slow-feeder bowl. Ask your vet if your dog has digestive issues or a deep chest — some breeds are at higher risk of bloat, and your vet can advise on feeding routines.
Multiple dogs
Dogs can be competitive around food. Separate feeders in separate areas are usually safer than sharing one.
Checklist
- Large enough portions for your dog?
- Supports your dog's kibble size?
- Tough enough to resist tampering?
- Reliable during power or Wi-Fi outages?
- Easy to clean?
