Pets spend a large part of the day resting, so a comfortable bed is worth getting right. The best choice depends on how your pet likes to sleep, their size and age, and how easy the bed is to keep clean.

Watch how your pet sleeps

  • Curlers who sleep in a ball often like round "donut" beds or beds with raised sides (bolsters) to lean against.
  • Sprawlers who stretch out need a flat mattress-style bed with plenty of length.
  • Hiders — many cats, and some small dogs — like covered or cave beds.
  • Lookouts may prefer a raised bed or a window perch.

Getting the size right

Measure your pet while they're lying stretched out, from nose to the base of the tail, and add some extra room. For curlers, a slightly snugger bed can feel more secure. Check the internal sleeping area, not just the outside dimensions.

Support for older or larger pets

Orthopaedic or memory-foam beds spread weight more evenly, which some owners prefer for older pets, large breeds or pets with joint problems. Look for:

  • Foam depth suited to your pet's weight.
  • A low entry point so it's easy to step onto.

If your pet has joint problems, ask your vet for advice — a bed is one part of keeping them comfortable.

Cleaning

  • A removable, machine-washable cover makes life much easier.
  • A waterproof liner protects the filling from accidents, especially for puppies and older pets.
  • Check that the cover will fit back on after washing.

Warmth

  • Self-warming beds use reflective layers to hold body heat.
  • Heated pads use electricity; follow the manufacturer's safety instructions and check for chew-resistant cables.
  • Radiator beds for cats hook over a radiator — check they fit your radiator and are secure.

Durability

Chewers and diggers need tougher fabrics and fewer loose parts. No bed is completely indestructible, whatever the marketing says.

Placement

Put the bed somewhere quiet, away from draughts and busy walkways, and not too close to direct heat. Some pets like a bed in each room where the family spends time.
