Pet hair gets everywhere: sofas, carpets, car seats, clothes. No single tool handles every surface well, so it helps to understand what each type does best.

Start at the source: grooming

Regular brushing catches loose hair before it lands on your furniture. It's often the most effective step of all. See our pet grooming equipment guide.

Vacuums

Cordless stick vacuums

Convenient for quick daily clean-ups. For pet hair, look for:

  • A motorised mini brush for upholstery and stairs.
  • A brush roll that resists hair tangling, or is easy to clear.
  • A washable filter.
  • Realistic runtime — manufacturers often quote the lowest power mode.

Handheld vacuums

Good for cars, stairs and pet beds. Smaller bins fill quickly.

Upright and cylinder vacuums

Often more suction and bigger capacity for large carpeted areas.

Reusable rollers

Refill-free rollers trap hair in a chamber as you roll them back and forth. They're good on sofas and beds, and there are no sticky sheets to keep buying.

Rubber tools

Rubber brushes, gloves and squeegees use friction to gather hair into clumps. They're often effective on carpets, car upholstery and fabric that vacuums struggle with. Inexpensive and simple.

Sticky lint rollers

Handy for clothes on the way out, but the refills are an ongoing cost and create waste.

Laundry

Hair catchers that go in the washing machine, plus shaking and tumble-drying (if the fabric allows) before washing, can help reduce hair on clothes and bedding. Clean your machine's filter regularly.

Matching tools to surfaces

  • Sofas and beds: reusable roller, rubber brush or motorised upholstery tool.
  • Carpets: vacuum with a good brush roll, plus a rubber rake for embedded hair.
  • Car seats: rubber brush and handheld vacuum; a car seat cover helps prevent build-up.
  • Clothes: lint roller or reusable roller.
