About Karen & Chilaquil
Karen describes Chilaquil’s unexpected rise online as something that unfolded quickly and organically. It all began during a difficult moment—his recovery from parvovirus—when she started posting voiceover videos of his day-to-day life. From there, everything changed almost overnight. His first videos went viral, and the rest is history.
How would you describe your content in a few words?
“Wholesome, quirky, relatable.”
How has your content evolved since you first started sharing online, and what does your creative process look like?
“My quality has gone up in terms of editing, but the storylines are still the same. Chilaquil leads [the creative process]. I record his day-to-day and then come up with a storyline that matches his energy in the videos.”
Are there any goals, dreams, or projects you’re excited to grow into next?
“I would love for him to make it in film! Maybe a Chilaquil movie, short film, or even a children’s story book would be so cool!”
Life With Chilaquil
Behind the content, Chilaquil is just as charismatic in real life as he appears online. Karen describes him as incredibly social and affectionate.
He’s “the most friendly dog I’ve ever met!” she says. “He always goes up to strangers and shows them their belly. He’s also really loving with his little sister at home.”
There’s also one very specific trait that defines him:
“He only understands Spanish, and his favorite word is ‘vámonos.’ He’s always ready to go outside and play, bonus if it’s the beach and there are coconuts involved.”
What’s a typical day in your life together?
Wake up, cuddle in bed, breakfast, walkies, mom life (Olivia and Chilaquil are mostly hanging out at the park or at the beach), create fun content, and make sure he’s a happy guy.
The Real Side of Pet Ownership
Like many pet owners, Karen’s journey hasn’t been without fear or uncertainty. One of the most difficult moments came early on, during Chilaquil’s illness.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a pet owner?
“The time he got parvovirus. It was really scary to see him so weak and not know if he would survive. We got really lucky.”
That experience, however, also deepened her understanding of dogs in a lasting way.
“Chilaquil has taught me that dogs aren’t just dogs. They’re very human-like; they feel so much and are so unconditional and patient with us. Sounds cliché, but we don’t deserve dogs.”
We couldn’t agree more. Dogs are the best.
Karen also emphasizes an important behind-the-scenes truth about pet content creation.
“Having a pet is a lot like having a baby. They’re a big responsibility and deserve the same level of care and attention. When creating content, their well-being should always come first, not the perfect shot. If they seem uncomfortable, don’t push it.”
Community & Impact
Over time, Chilaquil has helped build more than just an audience—it’s become a community.
Karen shares that they’ve “built a strong, loving community of dog lovers who connect with our everyday experiences and our Latin roots.” Many followers have also reached out with deeply personal messages, saying Chilaquil has helped them through difficult times.
Have any memorable moments or messages from followers stood out to you?
We’ve gotten many messages through the years that express the positive change Chilaquil makes in their lives. A lot of people deal with depression, and many have come forward to say that Chilaquil has made them smile. Myself included 🙂
Beyond the online space, they’ve also used their platform to support real-world animal welfare efforts.
“We’ve worked with local shelters in Mexico and in Los Angeles to promote fostering, adoption, and have raised over $10K towards Wet Noses Rescue through the years.”
Advice & Insights
When asked what she would say to someone considering getting a pet, Karen keeps it simple and honest:
“Get it if you have the time, responsibility, and patience!”
What’s one thing you wish more people understood about pet ownership?
“They’re emotional beings, need to have their needs met, and lots of love.”
And, for aspiring pet creators: any tips for getting started?
“Just post! Sometimes we get in our heads about what people might think, but don’t let that fear stop you from potentially building a strong community and platform. Try to tell stories, be engaging, and don’t just follow trends.”
Any other pieces of advice or insights you’d like to share?
“Social media is basically like the new TV. There are a lot of opportunities to grow.”
