Many cats prefer moving water, which is why some people find a fountain encourages their cat to drink more. A fountain circulates water through a filter using a small pump. It isn't a medical device, but it can make fresh water more appealing.
Capacity
Capacity affects how often you'll refill, not how often you clean. Even a large fountain still needs regular cleaning.
- Around 1.5–2 litres is common for one or two cats.
- Larger fountains reduce refills in multi-cat homes, but they're bulkier to wash.
Filters
Most fountains use a replaceable filter, often a mix of foam and activated carbon. Look at:
- How often the manufacturer recommends replacing it, and the cost of replacement filters. This is the main running cost.
- Whether filters are easy to buy, especially if they're a brand-specific shape.
- A pre-filter sponge in front of the pump, which helps catch hair.
Materials
- Plastic is light and usually cheaper, but can scratch, and scratches are harder to clean.
- Stainless steel is durable and easy to wipe clean, and often dishwasher-safe.
- Ceramic is heavy and stable, but can chip if dropped.
Pump, noise and power
The pump is the part that most often needs attention. Points to compare:
- Noise. Manufacturers often say "quiet", but that's subjective. A low water level usually makes pumps louder, so check the level regularly.
- Wired or wireless. Some fountains use a battery-powered pump so there's no cable sitting in the water. You'll need to recharge it.
- Low-water indicators help you avoid running the pump dry.
Placement
Put the fountain away from the litter tray and food bowl. Many cats prefer water a little distance from where they eat. A waterproof mat underneath is a good idea.
Checklist
- Is the capacity right for your number of cats?
- How much do replacement filters cost, and how often?
- Can you take the pump apart to clean it?
- Plastic, stainless steel or ceramic?
- Is there a low-water warning?
