A fountain is only as good as the routine behind it. If it's awkward to take apart, it won't get cleaned as often as it should, and slime (biofilm) and hair build up. Here's what makes a fountain easier to live with.

Design features that help

  • Few parts. Every extra piece is something else to scrub. Simple designs with a bowl, lid, filter and pump are quickest.
  • Wide openings. You should be able to get a sponge or brush into every corner.
  • Dishwasher-safe bowl and top. Check exactly which parts are dishwasher-safe — the pump never is.
  • Tool-free pump access. The pump housing should open without screws so you can clean the impeller.
  • Smooth, durable surfaces. Stainless steel and ceramic are easier to keep clean than scratched plastic.

A simple cleaning routine

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions first. As a general approach:

  1. Top up with fresh water daily, and keep the level above the minimum line.
  2. Rinse and refill every few days.
  3. Full clean regularly: unplug, take it apart, wash the bowl and parts in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and reassemble.
  4. Clean the pump: open the housing, remove the impeller and clear out hair. A small brush helps.
  5. Replace the filter as often as the manufacturer recommends.

Hard water

In hard-water areas, limescale can build up on the pump and bowl. A diluted white vinegar soak (rinsed off very thoroughly) is a common approach, but check the manufacturer's guidance first. Some people use filtered water to reduce scale.

Signs a fountain needs attention

  • The pump is louder than usual.
  • Water flow has slowed.
  • Slimy residue on the bowl.
  • A smell from the water.

Budget for upkeep

Factor in replacement filters and, eventually, a replacement pump. A cheaper fountain with expensive, hard-to-find filters can cost more over time.
