More pets means more food, more water, more hair and occasionally more tension. The right set-up can reduce competition and make daily care easier.
Resources: more is usually better
A common principle with cats is to provide plenty of key resources, spread around the home, so no cat has to share or cross another cat's path to reach them:
- Food bowls or feeders in separate places.
- Water in several locations — a fountain plus extra bowls works well.
- Litter trays: a widely quoted guideline is one per cat plus one extra, in different locations.
- Beds and hiding spots at different heights.
Dogs generally share space more easily, but resource guarding around food, toys and beds is common, so separate feeding areas are still a good idea.
Feeding different diets
If pets eat different foods or one needs a prescription diet:
- Feed in separate rooms.
- Consider a microchip feeder that only opens for the right pet.
- Pick up bowls after meals rather than leaving food out.
See automatic cat feeders for multiple cats.
Cats and dogs together
- Keep cat food and litter trays out of the dog's reach — dogs are often keen to raid both.
- Give cats high escape routes and dog-free zones; baby gates with a cat-sized gap can help.
- Microchip cat flaps or room dividers can create a cat-only area.
Capacity matters
When comparing feeders, fountains and automatic litter trays, check the manufacturer's stated number of pets. Bigger capacity means fewer refills and emptying, but always keep up with regular cleaning.
Cleaning up
Multiple pets mean more hair. A good grooming routine plus the right pet hair tools makes a big difference.
Watch for changes
In multi-pet homes, it's easy to miss that one pet is eating less, drinking more or avoiding the litter tray. Feeding logs from smart feeders can help, but daily observation is still important. Talk to your vet about any changes.
Use our product finder and tell it how many pets you have — it filters by the manufacturer's stated capacity where we've verified it.
